Jelly belongs in donuts. Or on toast. Or ice cream.
Not in my thighs.
Went back to the gym this morning, did another 30 minutes on the cross trainer and then some stretches and ab work. Came home, did some lunch things with the boys, then packed Elliot up to go do some errands before a birthday party he was invited to. Well, of course we ended up behind schedule and found ourselves with 15 minutes to make a 45 minute trek. And there weren't any buses around. Elliot fell asleep in the stroller. And so I began to run. I would run a block, which was between 50-75 paces, then walk across the intersection, then run some more. I was red and panting and hot when we arrived, but we were only 20 minutes late. And then the real fun started.
Drinking now. Cosmopolitans make everything better.

c-h-o-c-o-l-a-t-e
That is all.
Oh, and maybe some tea. And steak. With sour cream. And pirogies. And pancakes. And ice cream.
***Too Much Info Alert***
For the last few weeks, I've had frequent, but intermittent pain in the middle right side of my abdomen - about a finger width up and 3 finger widths over from my belly button. It's tender to push on and reminds me, eerily, of when I was pregnant and would get an elbow or knee pushing out of me. It feels a *bit* more solid there than on the other side.
Yes, I'm gassy. Yes, I'm eating a bunch of foods that I know I'm sensitive to and shouldn't be having. My bowel habits have changed a bit, but are still moving. I'm not pregnant - at least, I keep having negative tests and periods. But even my periods are different over the last few months - arriving later than usual, staying shorter than usual, and are alternating between being heavy/painful and almost non-existent.
No idea. Maybe a kink in my intestines? (seems too high for that) A hernia? A stone-baby? Trapped gas? Nothing at all? I'm seeing my dr for something else on Tuesday and will be telling her about it.
I was speaking with my aunt-by-marriage last weekend and she has Crohn's... we were comparing symptoms and it sounds like I could be setting myself up for a trip down that road in the next few years. She was diagnosed when she was only 5 years older than I am now, but said that based on the testing/questions, hers was late-onset and she'd been battling it since her teens without knowing it. She's not a blood relation, but there are many digestive issues in my family.
*sigh* Yet another reason I really need to get myself off the sugar/dairy/wheat/etc and back on track.
Still ok in the weight department: 156 the other morning. Surprising, since the belly seems bigger than ever. And the pregnancy comments are popping up again. Still want/need to lose at least 15 lbs.

Trying
Trying to get back on track. When The Sick hit our house for all of February, I derailed pretty quickly. It's very obvious I have an all-or-nothing personality. I know moderation is key, but I just can't stick to that, yet. It is my hope that once I can detox my body from all the sugar, that the cravings will lessen and that I will have more control and could allow myself to have some chocolate now and then without hoarding it all and turning into some sort of snarling she-beast if Jay questions how much I'm eating or looks like he might want to have some.
It's only breakfast time, but I've been good so far, and have packed appropriate food for work today.

Moan and groan

Today started out ok - oatmeal with blueberries. I had a decent enough lunch: bean quesadillas with tomato, carrot and goat's cheese. With sour cream and fresh guacamole for dipping. Then I raided dear hubby's chocolate supply. Yummilicious! Supper came mostly out of a box: processed fish cakes (lots of sugar, salt) and homemade sweet potato and carrot fries with curry dip.
I'm tired. It's possible I have a thyroid problem - routine bloodwork came back with low levels. This would explain the extreme tiredness lately, and a few other weird symptoms I've been having. but it could also be I'm pushing myself too hard.
We'll see.
I'll try to stay on track and keep up with my updates.
Today's creation: Pumpkin Currant muffins

Mix everything together and bake at 350 for 30 minutes.

January 29th
Ugh - here I come around again. I don't want to keep up this meal plan. The candida regime is kicking my butt and I'm tired. I miss my old foods. The ease of them. The comfort. The last 4 days have not been good - a steady decline into my old ways. Sure, they'd start off good enough and with the best intentions. But by the end of the day, I'd be polishing off at least 2 cups worth of chocolate frozen yogurt. Or raisins. Or half a box of After Eight mints.
Yes, tomorrow is another day. I can try again. Today I made a yummy batch of lemon coconut blueberry muffins. I ate 2 at breakfast and another 3 throughout my work day. Then another 2 after supper. I'm trying to save the remaining ones for work tomorrow - they're easy, portable snacks. We'll see how that goes.
I work in close proximity to a Starbucks. Mmmmm, how I love thee, Starbucks. I've not had my standard *drool* mocha since before I started the Candida Diet back in mid-November... I've been getting their tea, but it's just not the same. I'm a week into my 'no-coffee' kick. Is there anything left to take away? All my favourites are blacklisted.
Ok - positives: I love how I feel when I'm not eating sugar. I sleep better. I have more energy. I'm happier, less cranky. My nails are growing so strong and fast! I'm a better mom and wife. I'm losing weight. I'm re-learning (ok, that's a stretch) self-discipline. Still... all good things and excellent reasons not to quit.
Of course it's totally worth it to keep all this up. I just don't want to. But maybe that's the After Eight's talking.

Bah humbug!
Ok, so I'm still riding that sugar train, but I'm slowly making my way to the door. I just need to keep myself surrounded by foods I'm allowed to eat and need to make sure I don't get hungry - that's when I'm likely to fall upon a plate of cookies.
In a way, I'm glad I had this 'fall from grace' because it's been a good reminder about just how badly sugar effects me. Within 30 minutes, I have a headache and jitters. I get lethargic and aggressive (yes, a weird combo, I agree) and have an extremely short fuse. Long term effects are constant tiredness and the itching is coming back.
So, I must wean myself off again. But I will have to try again tomorrow, as today is already screwed.

December 20
Yeah, let's forget this day ever happened, ok? It was an anomaly. I was surrounded by baked goods and yumminess. I surrendered. At least I didn't give in to the total sugar choices like fudge, brownies, and assorted other squares. But I did have dairy... and some sweet baked goods like cranberry loaf and a phylo pastry cheese & peach danish thing, which was awesome! I did stay away from the wine and juice and punch. Go me!
Ok. Getting back on track. Please.

November 24, day 8
Had a consult with my naturopath today. Here are the modifications to my current no sugar/dairy/gluten regime: Take 6-10 garlic capsules per day, take 6 probiotics per day, limit myself to 1 pc of fruit per day. I can have goat cheese. She said that since for me, sugar is the #1 bad-ass, if I have to slip some dairy/wheat in there to get by, then that's what I need to do. And my ultimate goal is 6 MONTHS (*gulp*) on the plan, since I have some pretty hardcore symptoms of candida overgrowth.., (Biggest one is the extreme underarm itching I've struggled with for 2 years. I've tried everything possible to make it go away on my own.) But my immediate goal needs to be to make it to Christmas, and then if I must indulge in sweets, to try not to go overboard. Yeah, we'll see. But then right back on that wagon. (Of course, the more sugar I eat over the holidays, then the longer I'm going to have to stay on this plan. Bugger.)

Sugar & dairy free, Day 4
Yep, you read that title correctly. I have been (mostly) sugar, dairy & gluten/yeast free for 4 days. Loosely following the Candida Diet my naturopathic doctor is always telling me I need to do. Holy crap, who'da thunk I'd actually go through with it?! The shortest term goal was to keep it up while Jay was away. (He's away for work and back late tonight.) I figured if I could make it through 4 days with the kids all by myself, I could make it through anything. Next goal is 2 weeks, which takes me to December 1st. Long term goal is 6 weeks, but that's probably unrealistic as it extends beyond Christmas. But if I can keep it up for 4 1/2 weeks, to the end of the last week before holidays, then I should have a good idea of how well this detox is going. And then, maybe, I can ease myself back into things. Wheat/gluten isn't as huge a problem are for me, except that I gobble down grain products like no ones business. But hey, who am I trying to kid? I gobble down everything like it's my last meal.
*Breakfasts over the last 4 days have consisted of some combination of oatmeal (steel cut or instant), eggs (hardboiled) and a piece of fruit (pear, apple, banana), plus coffee with plain soy milk.
*Snacks have been almond butter, popcorn, corn chips, Ryvita crackers. Lots of herbal tea and water. Whole plain almonds. Feta cheese (but only because it was about to expire and I didn't want it to go to waste. Mmmm, salty goodness.) Baby carrots.
*Meals have been veggie wraps, soups, rice noodles, meat & potatoes. (I'm shoveling in a large potion of Shepard's Pie as I type.)
So yes, lots of fruit sugars in there, but I figure it's better than what I was eating before. And hopefully I can wean myself down to one piece per day. And I'm allowing myself to make my Freezer Fudge again today. I have a good supply of almond butter, which will be yummy in it. Now, the test is to make sure I don't eat it all. Maybe 2-3 pieces a day. It's made with pure maple syrup, so at least it's unrefined, but it's still sugar. Maybe I shouldn't make it?
I almost screwed myself up big time by making Chocolate Avocado Pudding on day 1. I found the recipe in the Deceptively Delicious cookbook and it looked intriguing (a GFCF version can be found here.) I only had 1 avocado on hand, so I halved the recipe. Still, it had 1/2 cup of icing sugar in it (YUM!) but, luckily for me, the avocado taste was too overpowering and reminded me very much of my extreme avocado aversion days while prego with Elliot. Ugh. Vomit memory is a terrible thing. So I only had a few bites. Felix tried one tiny spoonful, squeezed his eyes shut, shook his head vigorously and pushed it out of his mouth with his tongue. Elliot loved it and ate every last bite in 2 sittings.
You know what I'm craving the most right now? I figured it would be chocolate (and let me tell you, borrowing "Curious George Visits a Chocolate Factory" for Elliot from the library on day 1 of this adventure was a dumb move on my part!), but surprisingly, it's yogurt. All I want is creamy, fruity yogurt. Blueberry. Or peach. Which probably means my body wants some calcium, so I should take a supplement or eat some more leafy greens. Or maybe I can find a good sugar-free plain yogurt. Or goat yogurt. That might take the edge off. I've always been able to tolerate plain yogurt better than any of the flavoured ones. Hmmm, is this true of all lactose intolerant people or just me?
Other than a wicked headache last night, I've been feeling good. Happier and more patient with the boys, which surprised the crap outta me, since I've been on-duty non stop since Tuesday. I remember getting sick somewhere around day 5-7 each time I've done this candida diet in the past, so we'll see how I'm feeling in a few more days. Though, to be fair, I'm not sticking to it as strictly as I have before. Not sure if that's to my benefit or not. But we'll see where I end up.

Catching up to Nov 7
Too much crap food to recount. Including a full loaf of raisin bread within a 24 hour span. Lots of chocolate.
Debating the pros/cons to continuing this depressing food journal. I don't feel accountable and I should. I am lazy and don't feel like typing things up. And I'm not being diligent enough to note the amounts I'm eating.... however, if I do get myself together and start watching what I eat and working out, having a food journal well underway will be beneficial.
Today ~ Nov 7 ~
-raisin bran with soy milk
-lg coffee with choc soy milk
-3 pc roasted veggie & goat cheese pizza (3/4 store brand pizza)
-apple juice
-5 suckers
-3 halloween mini chocolate bars
-handful stolen M&Ms
-2 pears
-lots of grapes
-small glass white wine
-8 pc store brand Toblerone bar (large - this was maybe a third of the 400g bar??)
-spaghetti with meat & veggie sauce, & cheddar

In which I make my return...
Well, there's no point in rehashing the last week. I ate a lot. Of everything. Some healthy. Most not. In my defense, I had my first menstrual cycle in almost 2 years, so I guess that made me hungry. And insane. Or at the very least unable to rationalize more than usual. Oy!
October 23 marked 100 days since starting this blog. And I've not met any of my expectations. How to get back on track? I'm not motivated enough, for some reason. You'd think returning to the work force full time in another 3 months would be enough of a bee up my butt to get me going. Helllloooo, new professional wardrobe? COME ON, girl, you know you love to shop for business attire!
At last weigh in, I was maintaining 167 lbs. Unclothed. My mother-in-law asked me yesterday if I'd lost weight. Sweet, clueless lady. I thanked her and took a quick look at my swollen pseudo-prego stomach and sighed.
October 27th

Well, being that it was Elliot's birthday... I mainly ate cake. And fruit salad. And homemade mini-cheese pizzas. And coffee, with cream. There may have been some carrot sticks? And corn chips with hummus. But definitely cake, though only, ummmmm, 4-ish pieces. And 2 were quite small.
Plus side:
1 brisk 1 km walk in morning
1 slooooow 2 km walk in evening

Ok, first, thank you to "anonymous" who gave me a gentle kick in the pants to get back to blogging. Honestly, I've been feeling very discouraged. Even before going on vacation, I was debating keeping up this blog. But, I do have a food diary I kept for over a year about 10 years ago, and it is neat to read over, if nothing else.
I've been eating crap lately. And I feel like crap. And so I eat more crap. And it continues. Today, I've had cereal, grapes, cheese, an apple, & some yogurt for healthy things. Aside from that, I've eaten 3 timbits, 2 chocolate truffles, 1 md hot chocolate/coffee combo, 1 bag of werthers caramels (158 g total = 658 cal, 5g fat, 130g carbs) and another bag of werthers chocolates (142g total, 710 cal, 35.5g fat, 71g carbs)
No wonder I feel like crap. I have no motivation to clean my house or play with the kids.
Ok. That's enough moaning. I need to get things back under control. Pronto!
First on the docket: healthy food. Going to reheat some Shepard's Pie from last night's supper right now.
Plus side:
2 km walk this morning.
5 km walk this afternoon.
I skipped the weekly weigh-in post this week, but I did weigh myself: 166 lbs, evening, unclothed.

Ok, here I am at day 41 of my food & activity blog. I'm heavier than I was when I started, but I **think** that's muscle. Maybe. Oh who am I trying to kid - I seem to be stuck in a 3 days on, 5 days off exercise routine. I eat crap, and lots of it. I walk everywhere, but am a very lazy person. I really hoped having this blog up for all the world to see would help me with my accountability. And it has, sort of. I rarely binge on 4 bags of candy at a time anymore, for fear that a reader would call me out on it. But I haven't started a diet plan. I haven't stuck with my exercise routine. I'm not eating any healthier. I've joined several online groups and challenges, but I'm not really following along.
Bah. Mopey and discouraged today. I like eating. I love food. Chocolate is right up there next to air on my "Must Have" list.
But if I don't get motivated, I'm really gonna hate myself in the morning.
I've been meaning to put up my current supper meal plan, so I can someday get around to doing a project I've been looking forward to: determining the nutritional information and finding non-dairy and gluten free alternatives to what I'm currently using. We do a 5 week rotating schedule and head out for groceries Saturday mornings. This makes supper time with the boys running around like headless chickens, and me being so tired from another sugar crash, easier to manage. Each week runs Saturday - Friday. With a few exceptions, everything is made from scratch.

*gasp*
So I did level 2 again today, after shirking my 'responsibilities' for some time now. It was a struggle to breathe through the exertion, what with all this humidity we've been having lately. (40 on the humidex, which sounds better/worse? in fahrenheit: 104). The actual high temperature today was 31 degrees, or 88 degrees, for those in the US.
My sweet hubby prodded me along, swept the floor in front of the computer, made me put the DVD on. Got down on the floor next to me a few times and did parts of the work out. Then brought me water and a towel afterwards. Either the sweetest hubby ever, or is tired of looking at my fat ass!
I've joined a 30 Day Challenge on one of my mommy boards. We'll see who is the biggest loser in a month's time. Fun stuff. I may die.
Todays foods:
-Special K with raisins & soy milk
-lg coffee with choc soy milk
-1 pear
-10 yellow plums
-1 medium Tim Horton's Iced Cappuccino
-Tim Horton's 'turkey bacon club' sandwich on white bread with lettuce, tomato & honey mustard
-Tim Horton's boston cream donut (any guesses where I went for lunch today???!)
-1/4 wheat & honey bagel, toasted with butter
-big piece of mozza cheese
- salmon & haddock with basamati rice & peas
-237 ml Sprite
Oops - editing to add these forgotten foodies:
-2 cookies, 2 glasses lemonade, 2 rice krispie squares with chocolate sauce from the lemonade stand down the street.
Plus side:
-Slow 2 km walk
-30DS~2
Minus side:
-donut, sprite, cappuccino + lemonade stand goodies = lots of fat/sugar, but otherwise ok day!

CURB night waking to improve quality of sleep and increase energy
REMOVE temptations
Foodies:
-2 pc cheesy bread with butter
-rice krispies with yogurt, blueberries, soymilk
-lg coffee with cream
-2 nectarines
-scrambled egg white on 2 pc cheesy bread toast with butter
-1/3 bag salt & vinegar chips (sorry Jay)
-3 handfuls of M&Ms (Sorry Jay)
-"Lunch box Ham" *
-200g organic raisins (Sorry Jay - my raisin experiment isn't going so well)
-1 pear
-1 pint blueberries
-tofu & rice & snap peas with thai spices & soy sauce
-lots of water
-lots of corn chips and hummus
Plus side:
-Resumed 30 Day Shred, level 1
-Slow walk with Felix in the carrier, 4k
Minus side:
Ok lady... you didn't follow your new rules today. This is your first warning.
Went overboard with mindless eating while reading on the couch this afternoon. Also don't have any fingernails left. Bad habit. Stupid oral fixation or something whilst lost in a book. I've tried chewing gum, but it's not the same.
***Regarding the lunch box ham: a seriously messed up little thing I'd picked up for Elliot one day, as a treat since we were having a busy day. (It's a store brand "Lunchables") After reading the nutritional info, I'm glad he didn't eat it. And I'm sorry I was the one to eat it. Contained enough chemicals to mummify me and lovely buzz words like "processed cheese food"; "chocolatey coated". 370 cal and 21 g fat per serving: 8 slices ham, 8 slices "cheese", 8 crackers and 3 cookies. Pure yum. Blech!

Ugh. This can't be right: 167, clothed. Must weigh myself again before bed. I can't possibly have gained 6 lbs in 1 week! Goddamn fudge.
Today passed by in a blur. I'm an emotional eater and let me tell you, on days after sleepless nights with cranky and sick boys, I'm liable to eat anything and everything. Let's see if I can recall everything from today...
-2pc whole wheat toast with PB & J
-Special K with blueberries & soy milk
-large coffee with cream
-piece of pear
-handful of stolen M&Ms
-several baby crackers
-200g organic raisins.
-1/2 turkey club sandwich (turkey, honey mustard, bacon, lettuce, tomato)
-small Tim Horton's Iced Cap
-piece of banana muffin
-1.5 pints blueberries
-1 apple
-4 oz (?) mozza
-basamati rice with peas, 5 meatballs with bbq sauce
Plus side:
1 km walk with the boys, 30DS~1
Minus side:
Too much too much too much! Portion control, woman! Will power! YOU CAN DO IT!

Ahhh, so I started the 30-Day Shred yesterday. I ordered the DVD a week ago and it hasn't arrived yet, but I found it on YouTube (in 9 parts) and decided to get a head start. I'm enjoying it. Of course, trying to do ab work on the floor when a 1 year old is dive bombing your head while cackling hysterically and trying to give you open-mouthed kisses or trying to do leg work with the same 1 year old is hanging onto you for dear life (again with the cackling, it's a fun game!) adds another challenge to the work out. Oh - and it was especially enjoyable when he sat on my head with a poopy diaper. *le sigh* I should also mention that when Felix isn't doing those things, he's messing with the computer - clicking the mouse, opening and closing browser windows, calibrating the system preferences... fun times!
I've done level 1 twice now. It's a 20 minute work out, broke down into 2-3 minute segments: warm up, cardio, abs, circuit, resistence, etc. I'm really enjoying it! I'm surprisingly out of breath and sore afterwards, so it must be working. The plan is to do level 1 for 10 days, then move on to level 2 for 10 days, then finally level 3 for 10 days. Not sure what to do after the 30 days to maintain my new hot bod...
Ok, on to today's foodies
-1 cupcake
-small bowl cheerios with blueberries, yogurt & soymilk
-2 medium blueberry pancakes with aunt jemima syrup
-coffee with cream
-10ish yellow plums
-1 pint blueberries
-1 ham & turkey tortilla wrap with cheese & avocado
-Starbucks Chai Latte
-Starbucks date & oat muffin
-3 handfuls of raisins (sorry Jay)
-2 handfuls of goldfish crackers
-mac & cheese
-cheese & ham stuffed chicken breast
-half a bag (1 lb?) baby carrots
-lots of water
-handful of cheerios & baby crackers
Plus side:
Walk down town & back, wearing Felix on the return trip (4.5 km), 30 Day Shred Level 1
Minus side:

Ugh. So I got around to taking my measurements today. And yep, gonna post them on the internet so my whole 3 readers can cringe along with me.
44"
39.5"
41"
I'm a freakin' rectangle!!!!!! And for optimum heart health and to keep me at a low risk for type 2 diabetes and a bunch of other not-fun things, I should have a waist measuring under 35". *sigh* Depressing.
Todays foodies:
-Special K with banana & soymilk
-half basket of yellow plums (20?)
-more fudge (4-5pc?) **It's all gone now - hurray!)
-4 pc oatmeal/brown bread toast with PB & J
-handful goldfish crackers
-Large portion 4 cheese noodles with baked chicken breast
Plus side: ummmmmmm
Minus side: Fudge headache continues.
